Well Pen y Fan was very wet indeed today. I arrived at the Storey Arms carpark at 9am in slight drizzle and an overcast sky. Not many cars today which means that with any luck I would have the walk to myself. The weather decided to be kind for the first 20 minutes as I steadily walked past the side of the wood and up the pathway. Slippery underfoot and very muddy (just how i like it) the path was as I had predicted devoid of fellow walkers. It takes about an hour to climb to the top of the ridge which is reached rather like a T junction. To the left the path to the summit of Pen y Fan and right the path takes you along a wide ridge which stretches out before you in a semi circular ark to the right. Today was a good chance to do 'the triple'. Pen y Fan, Corn Ddu and The Crybyn. Three summits with steep decents and climbs along stone strewn paths. My daysack has a standard packing list for these walking days and consists of the following.
Change of clothing
Breathable outer layer waterproofs
Lunch (plus 3 energy bars)
Coffee
WATER
Spare gloves & Hat
Map & Compass
Mobile phone
Wistle
torch
I also carry a small tub of cream incase of chaffing which can make a days walking very uncomfortable indeed. The product I have found to be best for this is SUDACREME a waterproof cream which is easy to apply.
Back to work tomorrow so glad I made the most of today. If your a walker and love the mountains and hills it would be good to hear from you.
Until next time
